DIABETES

By Dr. Stan Odle, Jr.

What you should know about Diabetes

The population in the USA is at the 300 million mark and with 7% diagnosed as full blown type 2 diabetic (that’s a whopping 21 million person) there is little wonder that this life-style disease has reached epidemic proportions. Barbados and the islands in the Caribbean Basin do not show a vastly different ratio. In fact as a Caribbean nation Barbados heads the list, for a given population size, as having not only one of the highest rates of diabetes but of amputations (as a result of diabetes) than any nation on the face of God’s green earth.

While diabetes occurs in people of all ages and races, some groups have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes than others. Type 2 diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, as well as the aged population.

It is my considered opinion however that diabetes, like the vast majority of chronic diseases, come as a direct result of poor lifestyle and dietary choices and as such is completely treatable and curable. Genetics play an absolutely tiny part. Even if several generations back diabetes affected your family members it does not follow that you will succumb to this disease unless you fertilize that seed through poor lifestyles and dietary choices.

What is Diabetes

For want of a better classification diabetes these days are broken down into  type 1 (formally juvenile diabetes) and type 2. In type 1 the pancreas has lost most of its ability to produce insulin which is an enzyme needed in the break-down of sugars. There are those in the medical arena who firmly believe that there is no cure for persons with type 1 diabetes. I most definitely do not share such a view since I believe in the body’s own innate ability to heal itself and have personally witnessed scores and scores of persons who have totally recovered from type 1 diabetes and an even greater number from type 2 diabetes and all are now 100% normal needing ZERO MEDS. In type 2 diabetes though the pancreas may be producing the insulin yet it may not be properly utilized.

Some Myths

Right here and now let’s clear up some myths. Diabetes is not a disease of blood sugar excesses but of insulin and leptin sensitivity. The elevated sugar levels in the blood are the symptom and not the cause. Current medical strategies focus on normalizing the blood sugar level but the drugs used for this purpose worsen the problem because it increases the levels of insulin. Research now shows that elevated insulin levels are highly associated and even causative of heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, obesity and many other so-called diseases. Hence it follows that insulin injection is part of this senseless approach which does not provide a real solution.

Many people don’t realize that type 1 diabetes is actually an autoimmune disease that occurs because your immune system mistakenly attacks the cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. Like other autoimmune diseases such as lupus, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes occurs because of a malfunctioning in your body’s defense system, or your immune system.

Modern medicine will never find a natural cure or solution to the diabetes problem because they are not only on the wrong track but there are totally off-course and heading in the wrong direction because they are focused on blood sugar scores and levels.  Monitoring the blood sugar level is not the direction.  The real secret is to get the body and the organs of the body to function naturally and without drug intervention by giving it the tools it needs. These natural tools will be outlined later.

Old Science vs. New Science

The old science taught us that elevated blood glucose levels was the bad guy and that somehow through its manipulation with insulin and other factors the problem would magically go away. That approach did not and has not worked but to send more and more persons to the grave. The new scientific research points to the amazing fact that diabetes is actually brought on through a miscommunication of leptin and insulin involving both the liver and the brain triggered by latent tissue acidosis.

Leptin largely influences, if not controls, the manifest functions of the hypothalamus in the brain, including: Reproduction, Thyroid function, Adrenal function and the Sympathetic nervous system. Fat, and leptin, strongly influences chronic inflammation and therefore diseases associated with this including heart disease, Alzheimer's, and diabetes. It appears now that rather than your brain being in control of your body, fat, by way of leptin, is really in the driver's seat. Yet controlling all of this is the internal environment as described later in “the solution”.

Juvenile Diabetes

Some researchers have estimated that over the past 50 years diabetes has increased by over 700%. My contention is that diabetes is certainly not a genetic illness since over the past 50 years (within the same generation and hence the same genetics) Americans and now Bajans have or are seemingly following  the recommendations of a high complex carbohydrate, low saturated fat diet as promoted by American Dietetic Association, American Heart Association, and the American Diabetes Association. That, in itself, is an oxymoron since most of those "complex" carbohydrates, such as potatoes, rice, cereals, pasta, and breads rapidly turn to sugar.

Isn’t it time that we try something else since those recommendations clearly have not worked and in fact have been the prime reason that diabetes and obesity are at epidemic proportions worldwide?

Risk Factors

Having type 1 or type 2 diabetes increases your risk for many serious complications. Some of these complications include: heart disease (cardiovascular disease), blindness (retinopathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), and kidney damage (nephropathy). Without doubt, being overweight or obese most certainly lay an almost perfect path for the development of diabetes. With the Barbadian population becoming increasing fatter, through the over consumption of highly processed devitalized foods (junk foods), the increase incidence in diabetes and associated diseases would be inevitable.

The Road to Diabetes

Each and every day we all choose to take that road or not that leads to diabetes. After all, we are what we eat, drink and think. Put another way: whatever goes into the mouth will either bless or defile the temple. The foods which will get you to your diabetes destination a lot sooner are those that are: low in fiber, highly processed, high sugar content. Also on top of that list would have to be all dairy products and an animal based diet as oppose to a plant based diet.

The Solution – Alkalize or Die

The solution is simple and it dates back to creation and the way God made man. The irrefutable scientific facts are these.  The human body is alkaline by design (God’s design) and acid by function which simply means that the metabolic processes that take place within our bodies produces acid/acidic by-products. Since every single organ and organ system in the body function at optimum in an alkaline blood environment then logic dictates that we should, as much as possible, eat those foods and drink those drinks and have those thoughts which are as pure and as alkaline as can be.

We all know that negative thoughts are poison to the body. However, we perhaps did not know that there are certain foods and drink which also debase the body. Those foods are called ACID FOODS. Heading that list are all animal protein, alcohol, and dairy products. When you go back to God’s original plan for man, you will find that all the food types from which He said we should abstain are in the main ACIDIC FOODS. Those foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and seeds of which He said we should eat are predominantly ALKALINE FOODS.

Therefore, to win the battle against diabetes, we need to:

  1. remove the acid built up waste from the body,
  2. infuse new life and energy into our system by replacing the acidic animal-based foods with a more plant-based diet,
  3.  eliminate ALL DAIRY which would include milk, yogurt, ice cream, chocolate and even that new bad boy of Bajan cuisine, macaroni pie,
  4. drink special life-giving ALKALINE IONIZED WATER,
  5. take at least 10 minutes per day of Whole Body Vibration Therapy Exercise,
  6.  find at least 30 minutes each day to meditate and be at peace with love, cheer and joy in your heart. Find something to laugh about and last but not least,
  7. talk to God.
